Not a Fan (Part 1)
I. The Crowd vs. The Cross (Luke 9:23–25)
· Jesus calls for a "DTR" (Defining The Relationship) with the crowd.
· Three Non-Negotiable Terms of Discipleship:
1. Deny yourself — Dethroning self and crowning Christ as Lord.
2. Take up your cross daily — A daily death to your self-centered desires and agenda.
3. Follow Me — Lying down your baggage to walk in the footsteps of the Savior.
II. Three Tests of Fandom vs. Followership
1. Knowledge ABOUT Jesus vs. Intimacy WITH Jesus (John 3:1–10; James 2:19)
· Fans collect theological facts; followers experience heart transformation (born again).
· Information about God is never a substitute for a surrendered relationship.
2. One of Many vs. Your One and Only (Luke 7:36–47)
· Simon offered polite, distant admiration; the sinful woman offered costly, total surrender.
· Jesus doesn't want a slice of your life—He demands the throne.
3. Drawing Lines vs. Leaving Everything Behind
· Fans seek minimum requirements and draw lines where comfort ends.
· Followers sign a blank check, leave their "nets" behind, and obey completely.
III. Driving the Nail: Making the Decision
· Jesus isn't looking for admiration; He is calling for total surrender.
· Drive your nail into the cross as a public pledge; take the second nail home as a daily reminder.
