The True Seed of Abraham

Sermon Scripture References (NIV84)

I. The Weight of Outdated Laws

  • "Zombie Laws" – Relics of the past that have lost their usefulness.

  • The Early Church's struggle: Transitioning from the Law of Moses to the era of Grace.

II. The "Circumcision" Conflict

  • The shift from Temple sacrifices to Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice.

  • The belief that Gentiles had to become Jewish (via circumcision) to be saved.

  • God's intervention with Peter and Cornelius: God accepts us through faith, not a checklist.

Acts 10:15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."

Acts 10:45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.

III. The Problem with the "Judaizers"

  • False Doctrine 1: The promise belongs only to physical Jews.

  • False Doctrine 2: The Law is the path to righteousness.

IV. The Purpose of the Law and the Conscience

  • The Law acted as a strict "tutor" or guard to lead us to Christ.

Galatians 3:10 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law."

Galatians 3:16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," meaning one person, who is Christ.

Galatians 3:23–25 Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.

  • Our Conscience is our internal alarm system—it diagnoses the problem (guilt) but cannot provide the cure.

The Double Cure (Saving Grace) Jack Cottrell:

  • The Legal Problem (Guilt):

Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  • The Moral Problem (Corruption):

Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

John 3:3–5 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit."

Ezekiel 36:26–27 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

  • Baptism as a passive act of receiving God's grace and experiencing this Double Cure.

V. The Parable of the New Landlord – Charles Swindoll

Challenge: Stop trying to pay the Old Landlord, step out of the prison of obligation, and accept the free gift of grace.
